The packaging is very similar; both liquid liners are simple and contain two sections, the shorter half being the product and the longer half being the applicator/brush. One major difference is the applicator/brush. Urban Decay features a real brush that is thin, narrow and flexible which allows you to achieve a very thin, precise line or apply pressure to get a thicker, bolder line. Make Up For Ever is a standard, short, tapered foam brush that is seen more often in liquid eyeliners. With this type of applicator it becomes more difficult to achieve both thinner and bolder lines. 

Urban Decay Brush vs. Make Up For Ever Applicator

Both liners are 0.058 oz but there is a slight price difference. Urban Decay retails for $19 USD ($23 CAD) while Make Up For Ever retails for $23 USD ($27 CAD). You are paying a tad more but are those extra $4 worth it? Urban Decay currently has 11 shades available, from bright shimmery shades to cooler subtle shades – more every day colors. Make Up For Ever has 18 shades available in every color of the rainbow – more stand-out, unique colors.

Although they are both a liquid liner, the texture and consistency have their differences. Urban Decay is thin, smooth and glides-on very easily. Make Up For Ever is on the thinner side (almost like water), smooth and for the most part, applies evenly. Urban Decay's formula is thicker than Make Up For Ever's which made application seem easier and more precise.

Urban Decay is pigmented and opaque in one swipe. Make Up For Ever again, is on the thinner side making the liner sheer-ish and mostly pigmented in a single swipe. Some of the lighter Aqua Liner shades (e.g. 16 Diamond White) apply semi-sheer straight off the bat and need to be built/layered for an opaque coverage. When I swatched the two side-by-side, I noticed Make Up For Ever would bleed ever-so-slightly into the fine lines of my hand because the formula is almost runny compared to it's competitor.

The finish really isn't comparable since the texture and consistency are different. Urban Decay are more glossy and matte, while Make Up For Ever are more iridescent and luminous. I would say in terms of finish, it all depends on personal preference.

The wear time difference is big! Urban Decay is a longer-lasting liquid liner. I can normally get +10 hours of wear before slight cracking or flaking happens. They are waterproof in the sense that initial humidity doesn't cause them to bleed, fade or run but if you were to rub under water or high humidity they would eventually budge. Make Up For Ever, on the other hand, is the longest-lasting liner I've found. I can get +18 hours of wear before any slight signs start to show. With these liners you can rub as much as you'd like under water, they stay put! I found the Aqua Liners adhere to the skin more, if that makes sense.

Removal is easy. Urban Decay tends to flake, peel and roll off the skin easily with any makeup remover or makeup wipe. Make Up For Ever takes a little more elbow grease but it's still easy. I did find with some of the brighter, more pigmented Aqua Liner shades a faint stain was left on my skin. Keep in mind, the fact Urban Decay is easier to remove could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

None of this really surprises me, as I've always thought of Make Up For Ever aiming towards long-wearing, long-lasting, waterproof products, hence their name. Whereas Urban Decay aims for everyday, easy-to-use products. Personally, I reach for Urban Decay more often because of how effortless and easy it is to create winged liner, whether it be the formula, brush or a combination. Like I said, Urban Decay feels more like an every day liner. When I want something bold, bright and won't budge until I want it to, I'll reach for Make Up For Ever hands down.

Overall, with all that said, they're both phenomenal products and I really think it's about meeting your needs and style. Both these liners have their places; for example, if you wear winged liner as an every day staple, I'd recommend Urban Decay. But if you're going out on the town or wanting a pop of bold color, I'd recommend Make Up For Ever.

MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Repackage | New vs. Old

About a month ago MAC introduced their new Mineralize Skinfinish packaging and during my last online order (MAC Pure Heroine!) I picked up Global Glow which is a shade currently unavailable at my local store/counter. I had a feeling it would come in the new packaging, so I took this as an opportunity to share my thoughts and details on what has changed, for the better and for the worse...

Is this new packaging permanent?

- Yes, online orders and locations should be rolling them out soon.

Has the size of product changed?

- No, they are still 10g / 0.35 oz.

Has the price increased?

- Yes, there was a $2 increase. (US and Canada)

So, what are some other main changes? ...

The cardboard box the compact comes in has changed to a black, half matte, half gloss which matches the new design of the compact itself.

The outside of the compact has changed quite a bit. We'll get into closer details in a moment but overall, there is a fair argument that this new design is more modern while the old compact is left looking outdated. There are other opinions disagreeing, saying the old design looks classier while the new design is left looking like fake MAC products from eBay. I have to admit, I strongly disliked the new packaging when images started popping up and although I will agree that the MAC logo does look a little cheap and tacky, in a whole, the new design and features are starting to grow on me.

The dimensions have changed ever so slightly. The new compact appears to be more narrow, but thicker than the original compact. (Lost some width but gained some height?) However, even with these changes the original design still feels slimmer if you were to hold them in your hand. I should mention, the new compact does feel more durable though.

The bottom of the compact has changed to a concave shape which allows them to hug and fit together easier.

Another example of the new concave bottom. The new shape fits the curved top of both the old and new compacts wonderfully, making stacking and/or condensed storage easier.

The main change I was actually excited for was the updated magnetic closure! There is just something about magnetic closures that feels luxurious and expensive to me. The magnetic is strong enough that the compact won't open while being stored, during travel or in your makeup bag. But at the same time, the magnet isn't so overly strong that the compact becomes difficult to open either. (I'm looking at you, MAC Proenza Schouler Blush Ombre! *cough, impossible to open, cough*)

The new design doesn't open as far as the old design. I'm not sure if this concerns anyone, but was just a difference that I noticed.

The pans have also changed quite a lot. I like that the product sits above the outer perimeter of the compact, but at the same time this could also cause loose powder to fly away rather than collect in the edges. Now, prepare yourself for the downfall... Are you sitting? From what I can tell, you can no longer depot. Since the design has changed you no longer have a pop-out insert the pan of product is sat in. It seems now the pan sits directly in the compact itself. I know most people don't depot Mineralize Skinfinshes often, but occasionally they will swap compacts with special edition packaging.

Another big appearance change was the transparent window on the front of the compact. Like many people have said, it looks like a UFO! My worst fear with the packaging change was that the window would become a raised bubble, much like it appears but in reality, the window is flat, flush and follows the natural curve of the compact. This goes to show that looks can be deceiving!

The plastic coats the entire inside of the lid, sits closer to and mimics the natural dome shape of the product. No longer will you have to worry about that bugger accidentally popping out and/or slightly turning anymore! And on a side note, I don't know about anyone else, but I keep the plastic insert in all of my products. With this new domed inside I feel like I could misplace the insert and not worry about my product breaking.

Speaking of plastic inserts, because the shape of the pan has changed, so has the shape of the inserts. I like these a lot more as they are smaller and collect less loose product which leaves your compact looking a lot cleaner.

And that sums up the major differences between the new design vs. the old design. Like I said, the new look is starting to grow on me and after making this post, the pros of the repackage definitely outweighs the cons.
