"This thin and lightweight formula glides onto the lips smoothly and leaves SUPER intense pigment-rich colour with a bold, ultra matte look. It's very long wearing and completely kiss proof! Step One: Make sure your lips are bare and dry. Step Two: Apply complimentary lip pencil for a precise and perfected application. Step Three: Apply Ultra Matte Lip with the applicator or your favorite lip brush. For smoothest finish always exfoliate your lips first!"
The packaging is a clear, gloss style tube with a silver chrome cap. They feature a standard, doe-foot applicator and have no detectable scent or taste. The formula itself starts off with a very thin, liquid consistency but dries to a completely, flat matte within 30 - 90 seconds of application—although I feel a lot of the newly released shades are more forgiving on lips and have a slight natural sheen, rather than a flat powdery or "cling-wrap" type of finish. They typically wear between 6 - 9 hours and can be drying due to the ultra matte finish. The color itself clings to lips and while it can be uncomfortable, this ensures the lipstick will last longer.
Once dry, the product doesn't move or bleed and they become budge/kiss-proof, but like with most liquid lipsticks you will want to avoid eating big meals or anything oil-based as it will cause the product to move around, wear off and fade much faster. It's also important to properly prep lips before application and avoid pressing your lips together during dry time to ensure the color won't lift or appear patchy in those areas. Also, applying too thick of a layer can cause the product to crack and flake easily.
Bad Habit is a medium-dark, muted plum with hints of pink, cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade applied smoothly, evenly and had rich, opaque color payoff. It wasn't as matte as other shades, it had a light shine which I felt made it easier and more comfortable to wear. The thin, liquid consistency was effortless to apply and created very clean edges. Bad Habit lasted +6.5 hours and left behind a stain. (5/5)
* ColourPop Glitter (LE) was darker, cooler, more purple. ColourPop More Better was darker, more red. Stila Aria was similar, a tad darker.
More Better is a medium-dark, berry red with cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade applied smoothly, mostly even and had semi-opaque pigmentation. While it did dry to a complete matte, on some occasions I did notice a light shine for the first hour of wear. Due to the slight translucency, the color did look darker towards chapped areas and imperfection, as the color would grab. More Better lasted +5.5 hours, felt drying and left behind a stain. (4/5)
* ColourPop Too Sexy (LE) was brighter, more pink. Bite Beauty Aubergine was lighter, warmer, more red. Kat Von D Wolvesmouth was warmer, more red. Sephora Collection Blackberry Sorbet was darker, warmer, matte.
Scrooge is a medium-dark, deepened fuchsia rose with cool undertones and a matte finish. This shade applied smoothly, evenly and had rich color payoff. The texture felt thinner and more lightweight on the lips, as well as having a more natural, not so flat finish that looked more forgiving—regardless, it still clung to lips and felt drying towards the end of wear. Scrooge wore well for +7.5 hours and left behind a faint stain. (5/5)
* Kat Von D Bachelorette was brighter, warmer, more red. MAC All Fired Up was brighter, warmer.
Solow is a light-medium, muted pink with hints of yellow, warm undertones and a matte finish. This shade applied smoothly, evenly and had mostly opaque color payoff, I felt it applied more sheer towards the edges of my lips. Due to the lighter nature, it did accentuate imperfections and the color did lightly crack towards fine lines, but it only began to flake towards the end of wear. Solow lasted +6 hours and felt drying. (4/5)
* Kat Von D Double Dare was darker, more rose. Marc Jacobs Infamous was darker, cooler. Too Faced Melted Peony was lighter, cooler, more pink.
Stingraye is a medium-dark, muted brown mauve with cool undertones and a matte finish. It applied smoothly, evenly and had excellent pigmentation. Once again, the shade wasn't as matte as some of the others, it had a slight sheen which made it much more forgiving and comfortable on the lips. I also never experienced the color cracking or flaking. Stingraye wore well for +6.5 hours and felt lightly drying. (5/5)
* ColourPop Teeny Tiny was darker, more brown. ColourPop Tulle warmer, more red. Stila Patina was lighter, more mauve.
Teeny Tiny is a medium-dark, muted plum brown with hints of grey, warm undertones and a matte finish. This shade applied smoothly, evenly and had rich, opaque color payoff. Again, it had a slight sheen that looked more forgiving on lips, the thin consistency made it easy to create crisp edges and it never flaked during wear. Teeny Tiny wore well for +6.5 hours and was slightly drying. (5/5)
* ColourPop Stingraye was lighter, cooler, more mauve. Kat Von D Lolita was lighter, more rose. MAC Stone was lighter, more grey.
Overall, while these liquid lipsticks do lean on the drier side, they are extremely affordable and they offer a nice variety of colors. Despite the price tag, I wouldn't say these are necessarily the best formula to be a good "first introduction to liquid lipsticks" (ie. see if you like that type of wear and/or finish with this kind of product) but if the colors have caught your eye, they are definitely worth trying!
My personal favorite way of wearing these liquid lipsticks is to layer them over top of a lip pencil to help prevent the color from cracking and avoid that ultra clingy, dry feeling. Another way to wear these matte lipsticks comfortably is to pair them with a creamy, hydrating gloss—anything that won't overly break down or move around the lipstick!
